Pamban Bridge
Pamban Bridge:
A railway bridge called the Pamban Bridge links Mandapam, in mainland India, with the town of Rameswaram, which is located on Pamban Island. When the Bandra-Worli Sea Link opened in 2010, it became the longest sea bridge in India. It was India's first sea bridge, having opened on February 24, 1914.
The bridge's location in the world's most corrosive environment made construction extremely challenging. It survived the cyclonic storm of 1964 that destroyed many regions.
The entrance to Rameshwaram by rail is actually the Pamban Bridge. The bridge, which spans 2.6 km across the Indian Ocean, is a great illustration of the engineering standards from a century ago. Large ships can pass by the bridge by opening it from the middle.
Between 1911 and 1914, German engineer Scherzer built the Pamban Bridge. It was constructed to establish a railway connection between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka as well as to connect Pamban Island to the mainland.
