Devipattinam
Devipattinam Navapashanam Navagraha Temple:
With the blessing he was given, an asura by the name of Mahishasuran tormented the gods of Heaven in the past. The gods, trembling with terror, pleaded with Goddess Parashakti to intervene and save them. Goddess Parashakti arrived to battle the Demon Mahishasuran at the behest of the Deities of the Heavens. The Demon fled to Chakra Theertha in Devipattinam after being frightened of the Goddess. With her strength, Parashakti destroys Mahishasuran and dries up the Chakra Theeratha. Glad that Mahishasuran was destroyed, the gods showered the goddess with elixir. Devipuram became Devipattinam as a result.
Incarnation of Rama:
The Sri Lankan monarch Ravana gained the boon that he would never be able to be killed by Devas or Asuras as a result of his meditations towards the God of Creation, Brahma.
Rama's wife Sita was kidnapped by Ravana and imprisoned in Ashokavanam till Rama saved her. It is customary to offer a puja to Ganesha and the Navagrahas before proceeding, as per the traditions and customs. Rama then worshipped Ganesha in what is now known as UppurVeilukandaGanesha in the district of Ramanathapuram and then travelled to Devipattinam, which is 15 km away, to worship Navagrahas.
